Important tips before you go to Marrakesh

Fake guides in the medina
In the old medina, some people will offer to “show you the way” or be your “guide”. Many of them are not official guides and will ask for money at the end.
-
If you don’t want help, say “No thank you” and keep walking.
-
If you need directions, ask at your riad or hotel, or use Google Maps.
-
If you want a real guide, book an official guide through your riad or a trusted agency.
Taxi drivers and the meter
Taxis in Marrakesh should use a meter. Some drivers prefer to give a “tourist price” instead.
-
Always ask: “Please turn on the meter” before the ride starts.
-
If the driver refuses, it’s OK to say no and take another taxi.
-
Keep small coins and bills with you to pay more easily.
Prices and tourist traps
In some very touristy areas, prices can be much higher than normal.
-
Always ask the price before you sit down in a café or restaurant on the main square.
-
In the souks, it is normal to negotiate. Start lower and stay friendly.
-
If a place feels too pushy or uncomfortable, you can simply leave.
Places and situations to avoid
Marrakesh is generally safe, but:
-
Avoid very dark, empty streets late at night in the medina.
-
Be careful with people who insist on taking you to a “special shop” or “family place” if you didn’t ask.
-
Don’t follow strangers into closed buildings or rooftops if you don’t feel comfortable.
Respect local culture
You will feel better in Marrakesh if you respect local habits.
-
Dress modestly in the medina and religious areas (cover shoulders and knees).
-
Ask before taking photos of people, especially in Jemaa el-Fna.
-
During prayer times, some places may be closed or more quiet – just be respectful and patient.
